The Story

At the end of the day, I just want to get home and relax. Many of us have such busy, hectic lives and we want our homes to feel like a place of calm and solace. We want to feel safe in our homes. This feeling often starts when you get to your driveway, your apartment building, or your dorm. Unfortunately, there are people out there that will take advantage of that feeling of comfort and calm. This happened to a woman entering her apartment building. Someone followed her in and assaulted her in the elevator.

Suspect Causes Serious Injury in Elevator Attack

“SEATTLE — The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is asking for help from the public to identify a man who attacked a woman in an apartment building elevator.

The attack happened in Seattle’s Central District on May 30 around 9:45 p.m.

Security camera footage showed the man entered the lobby of the apartment after the victim, followed her into the elevator and attacked her.

The woman was left with serious injuries including broken bones in her face and a concussion, according to SPD.”

What Can We Learn?

First, keep yourself aware until you are in your home, safe, with your doors locked and dangers kept outside. Feeling like you are in a place of comfort before you are actually safe can be dangerous. It is likely that this woman let her guard down because she was in a familiar place, this may have made her an easier target for the attacker. If you have a door that you need a key, key card, or combination to get into, do not let anyone come in with you. I understand wanting to be polite and holding the door for someone. However, this can cause you harm. If you do not recognize or feel uncomfortable in the presence os someone, do not get in an elevator or other confined space with them. Wait for them to leave or make a move. If you are in a lobby you have a better chance of getting away without harm.
